Before we
start making.
Practical answers about artwork, materials, quantities, timing and the KERF production process.
Clear inputs make better objects.
Still unsure? Send KERF Design a short brief and we will point you in the right direction.
Ask KERF →What information should I include when requesting a quote?
Tell us what you need made, the approximate size and quantity, your preferred material if known, the date you need it and how the item will be used. Attach artwork, a sketch or a reference image from your email app after the website prepares your message.
Can KERF help if I do not have finished artwork?
Yes. We can assess an idea, sketch or reference and explain what needs preparing for production. If additional design or artwork work is required, we will explain it and include the cost in the quote.
Which file formats are best for laser cutting and engraving?
Vector artwork is normally preferred for cutting and line-based engraving. PDF, AI, EPS and SVG files are useful starting points. High-resolution raster artwork may work for some engraving and print applications.
Do you accept one-off and short-run work?
Yes. KERF handles one-off pieces, prototypes, short runs and repeat orders. Minimum quantities depend on the product, setup and material.
What materials can you cut, engrave or mark?
Typical materials include acrylic, timber, paper, card, selected leathers, laminates, aluminium and stainless steel. The appropriate process depends on the exact material and required result, so we confirm compatibility before production.
What is the difference between CO₂ and fiber laser work?
CO₂ laser systems are commonly used for materials such as acrylic, timber, paper and selected textiles. Fiber laser systems are suited to permanent, detailed marking on metals and certain engineered materials.
Can you personalise every item with a different name or number?
Yes, where the product and process allow it. Names, numbers, asset codes and serials can change from one item to the next. Supply a clean, checked list to reduce errors.
How long will my order take?
Turnaround depends on quantity, material availability, artwork readiness and current production load. Tell us your required date when requesting a quote and we will confirm a realistic schedule.
Do you deliver outside Cape Town?
KERF is based in Cape Town and can prepare suitable orders for delivery elsewhere in South Africa. Delivery options depend on the size, weight and fragility of the finished goods.
Will I see a proof or sample before production?
For appropriate projects, we provide an artwork proof, material test or physical sample before the full run. The quote explains what you will approve and whether a sample has an additional cost.
Can KERF produce corporate gifts and awards in repeat batches?
Yes. We can retain approved artwork and finish details for future orders, making staff onboarding, annual awards and ongoing gifting easier to manage.
How should I care for engraved or marked products?
Care depends on the material and finish. Avoid abrasive cleaners unless specifically approved. We can provide practical care guidance for the selected product when the order is completed.
